Mental Tension by John Scrudder

Updated: Apr 17

Simple solutions for impossible problems.

That's John Scrudder's philosphy, and a throughline for the work found in his latest exhibit, Mental Tension.  "If you just sit down, take your time and work through it, you'll get to the end," shares Scrudder.

While this may be good life advice, it's how John hopes that viewers engage with his collection of mesmerizing, hand-drawn mazes. Scrudder uses his work to explore the intersection of art, mindfulness, and mental health, inviting viewers to slow down, reflect, and engage.

A native of Santa Rosa, California, John has been developing his maze-making skills since elementary school. He continued experimenting and improving his craft through high school, until a career in the military put his art on hold. This hiatus ended five years ago when John featured his work at the Arts Council as part of our 101010 exhibit.

"I hope people see in themselves a sense of peace, joy, and love by taking a closer look at the mazes and the amount of love poured into each one," expresses Scudder. "Wherever people are on their journey of life’s paths, I hope they find solutions to their impossible problems."
