It's Friday afternoon and the melodies of Georges Bizet's famous opera, Carmen, can be heard echoing throughout the Arts Center. If you follow the music, you will find Lady Natalia Perez Lozano working diligently on one of her many paintings. Canvas depicting various animals, human figures, and natural scenery surround this prolific artist as she immerses herself in her latest piece.
Natalia is the Arts Council's latest Southeastern Artist in Residence. Originally from Colombia, Natalia leverages her background in marketing to help make an emotional connection with viewers. Her work has been displayed in various exhibits, including Obras de la Vida last September.
"My art is deeply rooted in the power of emotions and the inherent magic of nature. I believe that emotions are the driving force behind humanity-they shape our experiences, our relationships, and our understanding of the world," explains Natalia in her artist statement
While she traditionally works from home, sometimes life's responsibilities can get in the way.
"Home is more comfortable. Everything is already there. But also I need to do laundry. I need to stop here, I need to do this and that...Here [The Arts Council] I can be more concentrated on what I'm doing and I think it reflects in the quality of the art."
After a learning about the residency and experiencing a brief hesitation from applying, Natalia decided to submit an application. She was ultimately offered the residency amongst a competitive pool of applicants. Her time as resident artist will culminate in a solo exhibit set to open in August.
"My work requires a lot of time. I thought that maybe I should wait for the next [application] season. But then I said 'No. The opportunity is right there'," reflects Lozano.
Along with preparing for her solo exhibit, Natalia hopes to continue improving her technical skills as an artist and to share her knowledge with the community as a whole during her residency.
"I like to share my humble knowledge, my experience, and [to] inspire," explains Lozano. "Not because I feel like I'm some super great artist master or anything like that. But if I am good at something, I want to share with people."
Natalia's exhibit will go on display from August 1 - 22, 2025 at the Arts Center.
Mark your calendars and join us for the opening reception on August 1st from 6pm-8pm.
