Stephany Placencio: Southeastern Artist in Residence

"The only constant in life is change."

These words by the Greek philosopher Heraclitus offer us a fundamental truth of life - things change, grow, and evolve.

Stephany Placencio uses her art to explore this concept of evolution. Visitors that enter her studio in The Art Center are greeted with a beautiful collection of paintings combining themes of transformation, motherhood, and womanhood wrapped in warm tones. Now, she's excited to share this body of work, Metamorphosis, starting November 21st.

ABOUT STEPHANY

Hailing from the Dominican Republic, Stephany's studied visual arts at the National School of Visual Arts (Escuela Nacional de Artes Visuales) and later earned a degree in architecture from the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo. Her work has been exhibited in various exhibits across the country, including our Obras de la Vida exhibit in Fall of 2024. "My goal is to build a strong collection, keep expanding internationally and eventually share what I have learned through workshops," explains Placencio.

SOUTHEASTERN ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Stephany was selected as the Arts Council's third Southeastern Artist in Residence. For Stephany, this residency was an opportunity to grow artistically and challenge herself in a new environment. Initially, she felt uncomfortable due to how freely visitors could come into the studio and begin questioning the themes found in her work.

However, as she spent more time in the space, she started growing familiar with the staff as well as some of the Arts Council visitors, she has grown to like the environment. Along with her growing comfort in the space, Stephany has received affirmation from visitors that they understand the themes that she's trying to communicate.

"I love when people when people [say] 'Wow!', and they figure our what I want to say," explains Placencio. "The people say, 'Do you want to say something about motherhood or woman[hood]?' and I say 'Yes!'...I don’t have to work [hard] to transmit what I want to transmit. The people figured out everything in my paintings."
