Doug Berky’s performances combine several classic theatre forms: mime, mask theatre, circus arts, & storytelling. His training includes a B.A. in Drama from Furman University, study at the Dell Art School of Mime and Comedy & an apprenticeship with mime artist, Tony Montanaro. Before beginning his solo career in 1983, Doug toured with Two Penny Circus, Montanaro Mime Theatre & the National Technical Institute for the Deaf. He has appeared on the award-winning children's TV series, See-Saw & four TV specials for Swedish National Television. Doug has been a featured performer & teacher at the Eugene O'Neill Symposium, Commedia School in Denmark, Roanoke College, and schools for the deaf. Assembly Performance GEMS: THE WORLD & WISDOM STORIES (K-5) Doug Berky uses classic styles of storytelling from many cultures including masks, mime, puppetry and the power of a good story to introduce a collection of wisdom stories from around the world. Thesestories of hope, peace, freedom and justice will inspire students laughter and reflection while introducing them to literature from other cultures including Greece, India, Native America, and tales from Europe and South America. in-person or virtual. Total Fee: $700/ $1300 Assembly Performance NO SHOW (K-8) A performance has been scheduled, but the actor fails to show. Or does he? What will happen when a lone spectator finds himself unwittingly on stage? Experience masterful mayhem and Doug’s comical attempts at riding a unicycle and juggling, and his transformation into several hilarious characters from a gorilla to a ballerina as he explores the props and masks he finds on stage. Total Fee: $700/ $1300 Workshop Doug Berky Student Workshops (K-8) THE MAGIC OF MASK THEATRE & EXPLORING COMMUNICATION AND COOPERATION WITH MASKS. Older students focus on physical & vocal exercises to help understand how we communicate. Theatre games & exercises are used to teach observation skills, communication skills, & development of imagination & improvisation skills. Theatre & masks are used as a tool to explore literature & character through interactive exercises. Younger students use physical theatre games to discover the language of movement, ways we communicate without words, & silent ways to understand & cooperate with one another.
