Marco Lienhard

 

Marco Lienhard is the director of both Taikoza and East Winds Ensemble. He spent 18 years in Japan and performed as a member of the legendary Taiko group. He ran the 9000 miles of the perimeter of the US from 1990-1993 while performing along the way.

 

With his New York based Taikoza, Marco Lienhard tours internationally. Marco Lienhard has presented many percussion workshops to percussionists as well as students through Young Audiences, Symphony Space and Arts Connection programs. In 1995, Marco Lienhard was the Shakuhachi soloist for the NYC Opera's premiere of the Opera "Kinkakuji" and was a soloist with the Juilliard New Music Ensemble.

  • Assembly Performance: Taikoza

    Sounds and sight of Japanese festivals

    Students will experience the ancestral Japanese Taiko drums and the soulful sound of the bamboo flutes. A program that will take students on a journey through the seasons and festivals of Japan. A very entertaining and educational program that will make the students discover the music and culture of another country.

    Duration: 45-50 minutes

    Grade Level: Pre-K, Elementary School, Middle School, High School

    Maximum Number of Students: 500 (More than 500 and we encourage to do another assembly- there is no limit in number fees though will change)

    Technical Requirements: One microphone and one stand

    NC Essential Standards: Music

    Cost: $1,100 - one program / $1,700 - two programs (same day, same school)

  • In-School Workshop: Taiko Drums

    Sounds and Rhythms of Japan

    Students will learn about the Taiko drum and will hear about the backgrounds of songs. A sample will be given in case no assemblies are being held. Students will then learn to play the taiko. Using. Taiko sticks called: bachi and using different types of drums or percussion tool we can use and find. A great workshop to help with coordination, teamwork and learning about rhythms and music.

    Duration: 45-50 minutes

  • In-School Residency:Japanese Festivals

    Sounds and sights

    This residency will teach the students how to play the taiko drums and also some simple dance steps used in the midsummer Japanese festival of Obon. A series of classes will teach the students about the Japanese music and dance. We like to finish with a piece that students will be able to show to their fellow students.

    Duration: 45-50 minutes
