Arts Council of Fayetteville | Cumberland County Celebrates Community Artwork with Public Works Exhibition

A lively scene inside the gallery during the exhibition. Two women—one in a vibrant floral dress and the other in a colorful geometric print—discuss a pair of sparkling, silver-toned ceramic sculptures (one of which is an octopus) displayed on a white pedestal.

Fayetteville, NC - The Arts Council of Fayetteville | Cumberland County is excited to open up its gallery walls to the community with its annual Public Works Community Art Exhibition, sponsored by Fayetteville PWC. This exhibit is a chance for local artists of all ages and skill levels to share and showcase their unique perspectives, turning the gallery into a vibrant reflection of regional talent.

By removing the traditional jury process, Public Works fosters an environment where students, hobbyists, and professionals alike stand side-by-side, proving that art is not just a luxury, but a vital public service that connects us all. This spirit of access and community investment reflects Fayetteville PWC’s commitment to serving the public good—delivering essential services that support quality of life and strengthen neighborhoods across the region. Through its support of Public Works, PWC helps extend that mission beyond infrastructure, reinforcing a more connected, creative, and resilient community.

"PWC is proud to partner with the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County for the 20th year to host the Public Works Art Exhibition, says Tyler C. Patton, Chief Communications & Community Relations Officer for PWC. “This exhibition highlights the powerful connection between public service and creative expression."

Pre-registration will run from May 1st through May 18th. 2-D and 3-D works will be accepted by any artist residing in Cumberland, Hoke, Robeson, Sampson, and Scotland Counties, as well as Fort Bragg or Pope Army Airfield. Submitting one work is $15, and submitting two is $20 total. Artists are encouraged to pre-register online. Artwork drop-off will take place at the Arts Council from 5PM - 8PM on May 20th and May 21st. Artists can submit pieces without pre-registration, but space is limited.

Curator Collyn Strother has been engaged with the exhibit for many years and understands its importance among local artists. "This is a moment of pride for the community," says Strother. “The Public Works Exhibition highlights talent in a way that inspires others and provides meaningful exposure to artists who may not always feel seen or confident enough to submit their work to other shows."

The opening reception will be held on May 29th, from 6-8PM, at the Art Center located in Downtown Fayetteville. The reception is an opportunity for featured artists and art lovers to come together and celebrate the many works featured in the gallery. In addition to the opening reception, the Arts Council will host another Art After Hours on June 18th from 6-9PM at the Art Center.

The Public Works Community Art Exhibition will be on display through July 5th.
