Taikoza: Experience the thunderous rhythms of the ancestral Japanese Taiko drums and the magical sounds of the bamboo flutes. Hear the 150-pound Taiko drum, give thunderous voice to traditional songs. Taiko means big drums-and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings. Big Drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. This exciting group draws from Japan’s rich tradition of music, performance to create a highly visual and educational performance. With colorful traditional costumes and dynamic motion, Taikoza’s shows are immensely popular with audiences of all ages. In addition to drums of assorted sizes, Taikoza incorporates bamboo flutes: the Shakuhachi and the Shinobue. The group tours internationally and they have performed for Macy’s Thanksgiving parade and at Madison Square Garden for the Sumo tournament. Their music was nominated for many awards and Taikoza’s music an be heard on Nintendo’s Wii games and Taikoza was seen on NBC, History Channel and ESPN Assembly Performance: The Exciting Sounds of Japanese Festivals Students will experience the sounds of Japanese music festivals. The program features songs played on the 150 lb drums and bamboo flutes. Students will learn about the culture and the instruments and also learn a few Japanese words. The program consist of a the performance of several songs some on the Taiko and some on the bamboo flutes and includes some student participation elements during the program. Grade Levels PK-12 Maximums 350 Students, 45-50 minutes; 3/day Technical Requirements PA system, microphone Total Fee 1 performance - $1,200 / 2 performances - $1,800 Residency: Fun with Taiko drums In the Residency students will learn to play some Taiko rhythms and learn about Japanese culture. We will use some genuine Taiko drums as well as other percussion instruments and also buckets and sticks. Movements and rhythms are key to taiko drumming, students will learn about the culture and also perform it for each other or for the school. The students will develop coordination skills as well.
