Sheila educates and delights 3rd-5th graders with "The Scientific Mime, or, What’s Up With Gravity?" Author of "The Performer’s Guide to the Collaborative Process," she teaches workshops on mime, forces and motion, juggling, group communication, collaboration, and creative process. She taught "Community-Based Performance" at Duke, and "Creating Original Performance" at Bennington’s July Program. President of the SE Center for Arts Integration, she was a Fellow with A+ Schools, and Alternate ROOTS' Resources for Social Change. Founder and performer with TOUCH Mime Theater for 17 years, director and performer for Jelly Educational Theater for 4, Sheila has performed for young people for years. Assembly Performance The Scientific Mime, or, What's Up With Gravity? (3-5) This show reinforces concepts in Forces and Motion for 3rd through 5th grades. It begins with a lecture-demonstration about mime & a gravity-defying mime story. Juggling & dropping illustrate force, direction, gravity, & distance. The mime demonstrates & defines concepts like mass, force, & friction. Her struggles against invisible forces make them visible. The audience sees, hears, says, & does gestures for key vocabulary, using multiple learning pathways, while having a blast. Total Fee: $650 / $900 Workshop Forces & Motion, Mime & Dance (K-5) No added fee if I am performing on the same day. If not: $350 for 1 workshop 2-5 workshops: $400 Participants will: Learn Dance vocabulary while exploring Forces and Motion; Learn Mime techniques that relate to Science and Dance (push, pull, force, direction, and more); Take advantage of how Mime, and Dance can boost memory, employ kinesthetic learning, foster creative thinking, and teach cooperation; Experience connections between Mime, Dance, and Science; Make creative choices; Work collaboratively in groups to solve problems. Communicate! Collaborate! Mime! (K-12) Total Fee: $350 for one workshop $400 for 2-5 workshops in one day Students will: Know the definition of mime and pantomime; Be able to clearly communicate imaginary objects; Improve their ability to focus on, listen to, lead, and follow, others; Learn about making offers, accepting offers, and adding to the offers of others. “Yes, and…” Experience strategies for working collaboratively such as: taking turns, brainstorming on their feet, and using positive speech; Work in groups to create original performance pieces and show them; Practice positive peer response to work.
