DIDGERIDOO DOWN UNDER: Amazing Educational Entertainment!

About the Artist

G’day! Didgeridoo Down Under is one of the most popular educational entertainment companies in the U.S. We offer a variety of in-person and virtual shows, workshops and residencies. Our program themes range from Australian cultural arts to science, literacy, character building and more. Since 2003, we’ve presented 8,000+ programs at schools and other venues nationwide, and we’re based in North Carolina. DDU performers Rob Thomas & Tanya Gerard have performed at schools and other venues throughout the U.S. for 20+ years and have produced music for numerous films, including the IMAX movie Sacred Planet.

The DDU Show is a unique fusion of Australian music, culture, art, science, comedy, character building, anti-bullying and audience participation. The didgeridoo has been played by Aboriginal Australians for at least 1,500 years, and is known for its otherworldly sound. But DDU is much more than music. It’s interactive, educational, motivational and super fun!

During the show, we play a variety of exotic didgeridoos, demonstrating various playing styles and upbeat rhythms. We also use a multitude of props – including motivational signs, vocabulary lists, maps, globes, artifacts, artwork and puppets – to deliver educational lessons and empowering messages. We adjust our programs according to age levels and learning objectives. The program is very participatory, and several segments involve students playing instruments, dancing or acting out a story. We adjust the program content and delivery style according to the audience age range.

Performers Rob Thomas & Tanya Gerard are didgeridoo pioneers in the U.S. They have been making and playing didgeridoos for almost 30 years; they have performed at schools and other venues throughout the U.S. for 20+ years; and they have produced music for numerous films, including the IMAX movie Sacred Planet

Join us on an epic musical, theatrical and scientific adventure, from the birth of the universe to the age of dinosaurs to the modern world. Multi-talented performer Rob Thomas will weave didgeridoo / world music, a theatrical performance and awe-inspiring projector visuals into a captivating and interactive program. Students will learn how the air we breathe was created; they’ll marvel at prehistoric creatures roaming primordial landscapes; they’ll explore a mysterious underground plant communication network; they’ll observe interactions between different animal species; and perhaps most importantly, they’ll learn how to protect our beautiful and beloved Earth.

But this program is much more than science. Throughout the show, Rob will perform world-fusion music with his vast collection of unique didgeridoos and various percussion instruments. The didgeridoo has been played by Australian Aboriginal people for at least 1500 years. Rob plays a modern style, mixing fast-paced rhythms with relaxing soundscapes and organic sound effects. Some students will be invited on stage to play clap sticks during one of Rob’s musical pieces. During a section on the Industrial Revolution, Rob will perform as character from that period (including top hat and accurate clothing). This show is interactive, educational, motivational and highly entertaining!

Rob Thomas has performed at hundreds of schools, libraries, festivals and other venues over the past 20 years. He also has recorded several CDs and has produced music for numerous films, including the IMAX movie Sacred Planet.

This amazing cultural arts experience includes two to five full days of didgeridoo immersion. The residency kicks off with the DDU show and includes the same learning experience as the Aussie Funk Jam, plus more advanced didgeridoo rhythms and playing techniques. The residency culminates with a mini-performance, in which the students are the musical stars! Upon request, each participant also can make, paint and decorate a cardboard didgeridoo. (Cardboard tubes must be purchased separately by the school. We know an inexpensive supplier.) The residency is only available with one performer.

The didgeridoo is an Aboriginal musical instrument with an otherworldly sound that’s as exotic as its name. In this interactive program, participants use our beginner didegridoos and … learn how to vocalize and create simple rhythms … learn the fundamental concepts of circular breathing … learn about Australia and Aboriginal culture … learn how to craft and paint their own didgeridoos (on their own time) … partake in an uplifting jam session.

The Funk Jam works best as an accompaniment to the DDU Show (Australian Music, Character Building & More). It's also a great team-building event for teachers. Participants are mesmerized, inspired and motivated as they enjoy a one-of-a kind multicultural music experience!

Deep in the mystical mountains of western North Carolina, if you listen quietly at night, you might hear the ancient and enthralling sound of … a wolf! Although wolves no longer live in the wild in western NC, children’s author Tanya Gerard and her husband, Rob Thomas, have raised wolves and wolf-dog hybrids as pets for almost 20 years. Their pets – and their love of nature and storytelling – inspired Tanya to write a debut book, The Adventures of the Wild, Wild Wolf, and soon-to-be-published The Adventures of the Wild, Wild Wolf 2.

Tanya and Rob are now on a mission to motivate children to practice reading and writing, and to unlock their own inner author. In this engaging and fun K-5th program, Tanya and Rob will read and act out passages from her book, complimented by stunning photos and captivating videos of their wild pets. Throughout the program, Tanya and Rob will deliver motivational messages about reading, writing and life. Their messages are simple but important: Read as much as possible. Start by writing about what interests you. Keep writing, even if it’s not perfect. Follow your dreams! Tanya & Rob are a multi-talented duo that has performed at hundreds of schools, libraries and other venues nationwide. They also have recorded several CDs and have produced music for numerous films, including the IMAX movie Sacred Planet.
