Fanny Hensel (1805-1847)—child prodigy, virtuoso pianist, and prolific composer of well over four hundred works—was an extraordinary musician and astute observer of European culture. Granddaughter of the Enlightenment philosopher Moses Mendelssohn and sister of the legendary composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, she has, in recent decades, finally secured her place as the leading European woman composer of the nineteenth century. She excelled in exquisite songs of epigrammatic intensity and short, lyrical piano pieces, but the
expressive range of her art also accommodated virtuoso piano and chamber works, orchestral music, and cantatas that paid homage to J. S. Bach.

R. Larry Todd, author of the award-winning Mendelssohn: A Life in Music, will discuss and sign copies of his newly released biography, Fanny Hensel: The Other Mendelssohn. He will be joined by soprano Penelope Jensen to perform some of Hensel's songs, which her brother recognized as among the finest examples of the genre.

Directed by Cleve Davis

This classic Greek comedy tells the story of one woman's mission to end the Peloponnesian War by convincing the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands as a means of forcing the men to negotiate a peace. Lysistrata's strategy incites a battle between the sexes until reconciliation is achieved at the end. </description>

Cliffdale Movie Night
This movie is true girl power! This glorious comedy centers on an Indian girl born in England whose only desire is to become a football— or, as we say on this side of the Atlantic, soccer— star like her idol, David Beckham; but her traditional family refuses to even consider it. With the help of her new friend (played by Kiera Knightly), she secretly joins a team. As the team gets better and begins to gain attention, her secret can't be kept forever. This film is rated PG-13. Our licensing agreement does not allow us to publish the name of the movie so please call the library at 864-3800 for the title or for more information.

Spring Lake Book Break Book Club— Someone to Love
Three years after wealthy Jace Montgomery's fiancée, Stacy, committed suicide, he discovers a postcard of Priory House, a British estate. Although Stacy's family blamed Jace, saying she wanted to end the engagement, he knows their love was mutual, and has never believed it was suicide. Certain that Priory House holds the key, he buys the estate. He detests the rambling house on sight; however, he is intrigued by the Victorian ghost of Ann Stuart because, like Stacy, she supposedly committed suicide before her wedding to escape from marrying her intended groom. Jace knows that if he can untangle Ann's mystery, he can find out what really happened to Stacy. He gets help from his beautiful next-door neighbor, Nigh Smythe, a war correspondent on leave following a tragedy. Join us as we unravel the mystery of Priory House in Someone to Love by Jude Deveraux.
