Description:  The Gilbert Theater Artistic Director is the organization’s highest executive office, serving as both artistic and administrative director.  Founded in 1994, Gilbert Theater is a not-for-profit incorporated in North Carolina and is a registered IRS 501(c) (3).  Moving into its present home in 2007, the Gilbert occupies a 100-seat theater on the second floor of Fayetteville’s historic former City Hall.  The organization has invested more than $70,000 in renovations over the last five years improving its lighting, seating, HVAC, and web-based ticket sales.  The Gilbert is the premier community theater in south-central North Carolina, with a well-deserved reputation for its intellectually and emotionally stimulating productions ranging from classical to contemporary and original as well as local theatrical works.  The Gilbert Theater is committed to artists and audiences alike from all backgrounds and experiences and serves as the region’s creative center for showcasing local artists.

The Artistic Director acts as producer and sometimes as director for the performance season consisting of five plays. The Artistic Director of the Gilbert should be highly collaborative in selecting the season’s plays, supporting local talent, and working with the volunteer Board of Directors to develop and implement the new strategic plan. The Artistic Director serves as the Gilbert’s vital link to the wider region relating to publicity, fundraising, and interacting with varied members of the media, cultural and arts community, public agencies, and local businesses.

The Artistic Director is responsible to the Board of Directors for managing the team of office manager, technical director, costumer, house manager, performers, and volunteers involved with productions. S/he facilitates all auditions, casting, and rehearsals and helps mount each Gilbert production.  The Artistic Director directs one or more plays each season and invites guest directors as desired.

Job Requirements: The job involves a combination of artistic talents and skills as well as administrative abilities and the willingness to collaborate with and support local artists and speak to a variety of theatrical interests.  While a bachelor’s or higher relevant degree is preferred, more importantly, at least five years of experience as a lead director or producer of live theater is expected to meet the Gilbert Theater’s requirements.

Applicants should submit a letter of interest, résumé or CV, and three letters of recommendation to the Search Committee c/o Sara Oswald, President of the Gilbert Theater Board of Directors, at sara.oswald1@gmail.com

All applications will be acknowledged by the Search Committee.  Finalists will be required to conduct auditions at the theater in early February for the Gilbert’s production of As You Like It as part of the application process.
