The Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local History Museum has developed the exhibit, “It Is Well With My Soul” as an examination of the history, tradition, and artistic form in the historic African-American cemeteries of Fayetteville-Cumberland County. The exhibit will explore the unique aspects of the urban and rural cemeteries and churchyards, common symbolism, and the tradition associated with certain trees and plants. It will examine the wide variety of grave markers ranging from the highest quality hand crafted monuments to the rich vernacular art forms. The exhibit is being offered in conjunction with Black History Month, and as such, the burial sites of several African-Americans that helped shape the history of our community will also be showcased. Each cemetery or churchyard, each individual grave represents a scared place of remembrance, a thread in the tapestry that is Fayetteville’s African-American heritage and history.
