Transit Vocal Band

About the Artist

Transit Vocal Band captivates audiences by demonstrating the power and versatility of the most powerful instrument of all - the human voice! Boasting the production of award-winning albums and performances for audiences of up to 40,000 people in venues across the U.S., our cast of professonal musicians has also educated and entertained over 800 school audiences since the group's inception in 2005. With experience teaching K-12 as well as college level students, our interactive educational programming inspires students to explore the history of the artistic and scientific innovation associated with the a cappella genre. 

In this program, students will:

  1. Hear, compare and contrast the characteristic sounds of early a cappella forms that have evolved throughout history;
  2. Gain an understanding of the historical and cultural contextsw imperative to the development of early a cappella forms;
  3. Become familiar with typical voice parts within an a cappella ensemble, including the vocal percussionist ;
  4. Learn to imitate variious instrument sounds by varying pitch, rhythm, and timbre of vocalizations;
  5. Observe individual layering then simultaneous combination of vocal parts to create an organic song arrangement; 
  6. Define common a cappella terms.

Technical Requirements

We require one sturdy 6 ft.- 8 ft. table near a reliable power source and a minimum of 10 bottles of water. To ensure a safe load-in and quality sound check, performance space must be free of students at least one hour before showtime. We provide our own sound system, complete with speakers, a mixing console, wireless microphones, in-ear monitors and associated receivers.

School Portion1 performance- $715 / 2 performances (same day and same school)- $1,045 / 3 performances (same day and same school)- $1,375

In this program, students will:

  1. Summarize the vocal roles within an a cappella group, including the bass and vocal percussion (rhythm section);
  2. Hear a brief overview of the science of sound as it pertains to singing;
  3. Discuss the function of specific technological tools used in an a cappella performance, including speakers (mains and subwoofers), wireless microphones and receivers. a mixing console, and in-ear monitors;
  4. Observe how a sound system amplifies and modifies vocalizations in an a cappella performance;
  5. Compare and contrast an a cappella song with and without the use of our sound system.

  2. Fefine the term genre as it pertains to music;
  3. Compare and contrast unique characteristics of various popular musical genres, including Motown, Country, Rap/Hip-Hop and Jazz;
  4. Gain an understanding of the historical' and cultural contexts imperative to the development of the aforementioned genres;
  5. Observe the creative process by which songs of any genre can be reproduced vocally;
  6. Witness the artistic innovation involved in vocally transforming a song between genres!
