About the Artist

Red Herring Puppets, an award-winning professional puppet company, delights young audiences with lively and informative productions.  Lisa Sturz, artistic director, worked with Henson Productions, Disney Imagineering, Lucasfilm, PBS, Ice Capades, UNC-TV, the Asheville Symphony and The Lyric Opera of Chicago. Lisa is a certified teaching artist and specializes in curriculum based performances and residencies.
 

AESOP'S FABLES (K-6)

HANSEL & GRETEL (K-5) Classic tale about temptation and empowerment.

ADVENTURES IN FOLKLORE (K-5) Stories from France, India,  “Jack and the Beanstalk” and “The Three Little Pigs”.

LITTLE ONE INCH (K-6) This enchanting coming-of-age folktale from Japan features a scrolling backdrop, elaborate scenery and beautifully crafted marionettes.

Technical Requirements

Our shows are self-containted. We bring our own sound system and use general lighting. We prefer a raised stage, but it is not essential.

We offer a wide range of programs in puppet related areas for K-12 and staff. Most five day residencies involve creating a curriculum-based script, crafting puppets, recording dialogue, and student performance. 

SAMPLE TOPICS: Electricity, Life Cycles, Weather, Folktales, Animal Groups, Mythology

SAMPLE TECHNIQUES:  Shadow puppets, hand puppets, animation with overhead projectors, scarf marionettes, recycled rod puppets, patterning in foam, toy theatre, bunraku and masks. Please contact us for specifics and materials.

We also work with students to create puppets and costumes for school productions like Beauty and the Beast.

Hands on workshop guiding students to create shadow puppets from cardboard and cellophane, culminating in a brief performance.

GOALS: Students learn the difference between opaque and transparent objects and practice skills in drawing, cutting, movement, and co-operation.

Slide/video/demonstration  gives an overview of  puppetry including different styles of puppets and how they are manipulated, the history of the art form, and it’s modern applications.  We bring examples from around the world.  

GOALS: Awareness of puppetry as an art form in various cultures.
