About the Artist

Footworks is renowned for theater, festival, and Arts-In-Education performances. Having toured internationally since 1979, the company is dedicated to teaching youth and recognized for over 37 years in Arts-In-Education. Footworks remains true to traditional American music and percussive dance presenting roots and branches from many cultures in celebration of the cultural diversity found in the United States.

Keeping the Beat: Multicultural Influences in American Music and Dance Footworks shares the joy of dance while illuminating multicultural perspectives of American percussive dance. The program includes live music, American clogging and hamboning, Irish and African dance, call-and-answer songs and more. Students will learn about the diversity and commonality of people in NC, the US, and the world and how these cultures borrowed and shared traditions resulting in new American traditions. Students gain an understanding of music and dance as an essential aspect of history and human experience. The program is tailored to all age groups and includes lots of participation. Irish Roots and American Branches Performing live Irish music and dance with their descendant American styles, Footworks illuminates the American story of traditions coming from the Old World and meeting others here, resulting in new traditions. Technical Requirements

Can perform on any floor as long as it is not carpeted and is smooth with no uneven surfaces. A wooden performing surface is preferred if available. A microphone on a stand connected to the PA system in the performance space is appreciated but not required. Access to the performance space 45 min. to 1 hour before the performance.

Footworks teaches traditional music and dance in a way that makes participation accessible and fun, creating an atmosphere where students can express their creativity, encouraging self-expression and self-esteem. Residencies include learning multicultural percussive dances that illuminate the diversity of American culture, history and social studies lessons, singing, hamboning, and improvisational exercises that bring students together interactively connecting them to each other and their culture. The learning sequences develop communication, motor skills, ability to focus, and collaboration skills.  Residencies are custom designed to fit the needs of your school. 1-2 artists.
