Burning Coal Theatre Company

About the Artist

Burning Coal is Raleigh’s small professional theatre. Now in our 20th season, we have integrated professional and early-career artists to create an explosive blend of talent, energy and passion. Awards include NCTC Parides Award for Excellence in Professional Theatre and the 2000 Indy Award for Excellence from the Independent Weekly. A major part of our core mission, our educational tours and residencies have received exceptional responses from schools across the state.

Burning Coal’s SHAKESCENES performance aims to demystify Shakespeare and his works for elementary, middle, and high school students. In this 50-minute performance, Burning Coal’s Director of Education debunks the myths surrounding Shakespeare and his plays (they aren’t old, boring, or hard to understand!) through fun, interactive, scholarly narration. This is then supplemented by scenes from some of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays performed by Burning Coal’s professional acting troupe.

Our most popular residencies include playwriting, viewpoints, acting, script analysis, and mask work. Long term residencies are available to bring a Burning Coal artist to direct a school play or provide production support.

Burning Coal offers a one week residency focused on introducing Shakespeare to elementary, middle, and high school age students.
