About the Artist

Ballethnic Dance Company, Atlanta's first and only African-American professional ballet company is a 29 year-old classically trained culturally diverse ballet company that blends traditional ballet with the artistic influences of other ethnic cultures. Co-founders Nena Gilreath, a North Carolina native and UNC School of the Arts alumnus, and her husband Waverly Lucas, are both former dancers with the Dance Theatre of Harlem and the Atlanta Ballet. They share an impressive list of artistic credits including performances at New York City ' s Lincoln Center, Atlanta's National Black Arts Festival, the 1996 Cultural Olympiad and the Bermuda Arts Festival. Accolades include Creative Loafing's Best of Atlanta Critics Pick (Best Dancer), the National Choreographers Award, The McPheeter's Medallion Award for Community, Lexus Leaders of the Arts and the Atlanta NAACP President's Award.

Athleticism of Dance (K-12)
This interactive lecture demonstration highlights the similarities between sports and dance and the importance of physical activity. Topics include warm-ups, injury prevention, body control, and the concepts of inertia, centripetal force, and momentum. Demonstrations include strength building routines and a variety of impressive partnered lifts. Students learn dance vocabulary, basic choreography, and then present a brief performance set to contemporary music.

The Leopard Tale (K-12)
Choreographed by Waverly T. Lucas, II , this ballet eloquently fuses classical ballet and African Dance into a high-energy, powerful performance. Students will experience the survival of the leopard as it travels through the African jungle, the rain forest and ultimately into a village.

Residencies consist of weeklong intensive workshops and learning choreography from Urban Nutcracker and The Leopard Tale; including aspects of makeup and costumes. They are available for all grade levels including teacher training on various dance techniques and curriculum connections.

Program Description: Students will work with six to seven company members and receiveinstruction in ballet and other dance forms, as well as music instruction. At the end of the residency, the company will perform a full lecture demonstration, and students will have the opportunity to showcase what they have learned.

Taught by members of Ballethnic Dance Company, the dance workshop offers participants an opportunity to learn and execute steps and sequences from Ballet, Modern, Jazz and Africandance steps from " The Leopard Tale " , BDC signature ballet.
