About the Artist

Surapsari, a native of Japan, is an accomplished performing artist specializing in dance, theatre and shadow puppetry from Japan, the Indonesian island of Bali and India. Surapsari has performed in the US, Mexico, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia for a variety of audiences, including K-12 students.
 

This program introduces students to the myths, arts, and culture of Japan. The audience members will learn about Japanese mythological figures, instruments used for Japanese traditional music, and cultural values of Japanese people. Elementary students will engage in story analysis after watching a dance-drama based on Japan' oldest myth. Middle school students will learn about Shintoism, Japan's indigenous religion. High school students will learn  how Shintoism has been used by different political powers to advance their individual goals. Enjoy singing a Japanese song, trying on a mask of Hyottoko the Funny Man or taking a role in a dance-drama.

Lively storytelling through Bharatanatyam, the 2000 year old dance from India. Learn symbolic hand gestures called mudra. Take part in a dance-drama based in the Ramayana, the 2000 year old Hindu epic.

Explore social life, arts, religion, and important achievements of the Indus Valley civilization through Bharatanayam storytelling dance. This multimedia show includes a Powerpoint presentation to aid students’ learning of the subject.

Shadow Puppet Theatre 1 Day Residency 

One half hour shadow puppet performance (100 students max.) plus 4 shadow puppet making workshops (25 max. per workshop).

Learn the basics of Bharatanatyam, the oldest Indian dance style that has been in existence for approximately 2,000 years.  Middle and high school students will also compare Bharatanatyam with Western dance styles such as ballet, modern and hip-hop.

Learn the art of calligraphy with Surapsari, a Japanese native. Participating students will enjoy anecdotes relating to the history of Japanese calligraphy and try writing their name in Japanese characters with a brush pen and ink. This is a great cultural enrichment program for middle and high school students, as well as a rare opportunity to try a new art form.

Learn about washi, traditional Japanese paper through a video and PowerPoint presentation and create a Chigiri-e artwork. Chigiri-e is Japanese collage art created with colorful paper that has been torn with hands. Flowers, trees and landscape are popular themes in Chigiri-e art, reflecting Japanese people’s love and admiration for nature. Participating students will complete their artwork by signing their name in Japanese characters.
